Description: Dick Privaci on Voter Fraud
I don't know about you,
but when I hear people talking about voter fraud,
the first thing I usually think of
is the candidates I've been asked to vote for -
but maybe that's just me.
And I understand,
when Republicans scream and yell about voter fraud these days,
they don't mean Sarah Palin,
maybe not even subconsciously -
unless they somehow think of her as a little acorn
from which the mighty oak
of crazy Christian dictatorship will grow.
I've heard loonier ideas. But not many.
The Republican whipping boy these days -
since they don't have slaves any more -
is a group called ACORN,
a.k.a. Association for Community Organisations for Reform Now,
which works to improve the lot of poor people,
many of whom are less than white-skinned,
being descended from slaves,
which makes them OK as Republican whipping boys,
it's all pretty circular.
If you haven't heard about it,
this is where your luck runs out,
'cause I gonna tell you about ACORN now -
see Republicans want you to believe these ACORN people
are a vast poor-people's conspiracy
committing voter fraud by registering people to vote.
Wait a minute, where's the fraud in that?
Relax -- I'm getting to it - or more accurately,
I'm getting to what the Republicans want you to think is fraud.
The way it works is
ACORN hires people to go out and register voters -
some of the people ACORN hires are lazy dickwads -
or maybe undercover Republicans posing as poor dickwads -
anyway, whoever these wretched scumbags are,
they turn in cards with fake voter names -
Bret Favre, Abe Lincoln, Ben Franklin, Donald Duck -
only that's not the fraud part, according to Republicans --
The next step in the process,
ACORN checks every voter registration card
and flags the ones that look suspicious -
like George Bush, Dick Cheney.
Then ACORN turns in all the voter registration cards,
even the phony ones - because the law says,
that's what they gotta do. So they do it.
And that's what Republicans call fraud,
turning in bogus voter cards that they've marked as bogus -
makes sense, right?
Here's the Republican logic -
ACORN registers Mickey Mouse to vote,
and notes that he's a cartoon character, like so many politicians,
but also that he's fictional and a harmless mouse,
so they flag his card as bogus and turn it in -
creating the risk that the election board might miss it,
and that might lead to Mickey Mouse -
or a Mickey Mouse impersonator -
actually showing up at the polls on election day
and not voting for Republicans -
that's a credible scenario, right?
When you register dead people - or imaginary people -
or cartoon characters to vote,
the chance of them showing up on election day is pretty slim,
so they won't vote and there's no voter fraud.
No wonder John McCain accused ACORN of
"destroying the fabric of democracy."
That's how you get a little acorn to grow into a mighty hoax.
